How to preserve Scotch bonnet peppers | Three Top Ways

If you are a very big pepper enthusiast this will not come off as a surprise to you as we are looking to bring you the best possible ways to preserve and keep your Scotch bonnet peppers for a longer period than what most people would promise.

This also comes with the promise that this will not spoil within some few days but will be able to stay longer than some protracted period of time.

Drying scotch bonnet peppers

Drying is as old as time and it is very efficient in preserving almost every food item although you might end up loosing some of the nutrients of the food in question just like in the case of this Scotch Bonnet Pepper.

This is one of the most effective method to preserve Scotch bonnet peppers and it has been very much around for a very long time. now, this can be done in many ways but using a food dehydrator is the best option but in any case you do not have this machine you can use the natural process which is drying over normal sunlight.

Now here is the steps to preserve Scotch bonnet peppers using food Dehydrators.

  1. Place the strips on the dehydrator racks
  2. Set the temperature to 125 degrees Fahrenheit
  3. Dry the peppers until they are leathery or crisp
  4. The whole process will take 4-6 hours.

In an event that there is no food dehydrator you can make use of another process which is explained below.

Place the pepper in an oven that is at its lowest setting or in a warm, sunny spot outdoors

Place the washed and sliced peppers on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper

Dry the peppers until they are leathery or crisp, which will take 8-12 hours in an oven or 2-3 days in a warm spot outdoors.

Once your peppers are dried, store them in a container which must be airtight in a cool, dark place for up to 1 year.

Now let us look at the second option which is pickling.

Pickling scotch bonnet peppers

Pickling is another way to preserve Scotch bonnet peppers and this has been as old as time immemorial and there are sets of method to do this and by far it is kind of easy to say the very least and here are the steps to preserve Scotch bonnet peppers using Pickling.

  1. Wash them and slicing them into thin strip
  2. Make a pickling solution by combining 2 cups of vinegar (any type), 2 cups of water, 1 tablespoon of salt, and 1 tablespoon of sugar in a pot over medium heat
  3. Bring the mixture to a boil, then remove it from the heat and let it cool slightly
  4. Place the pepper strips into jars or containers (this will depend on how many peppers you have), then pour the pickling solution over top so that the peppers are completely covered
  5. Seal the jars or containers tightly and store them in a cool, dark place for up to 3 months

Freezing scotch bonnet peppers

We can all agree that freezing is another way to preserve Scotch bonnet peppers and by far one of the most efficient methods as the pepper will not look like it has been stored rather it will look very very fresh and new like just plucked when you want to use it over the time of storage.

Here is how to preserve Scotch bonnet peppers using freezing as an option.

  1. Wash the peppers and slicing them into thin strips
  2. Place the pepper strips on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and flash freeze them for 1-2 hours (this just means freezing them quickly so that they’re not stuck together)
  3. Once they’re frozen solid, transfer them to airtight bags or containers
  4. Store them in the freezer for up to 6 months

Why do we preserve Scotch bonnet peppers

These pepper are seasonal and enjoying them is a very sweet thing that it should not be allowed to elude the hands of anyone even in the period of their scarcity and much like everything else this is the leading reason why it is being preserved like this.
